Welcome!
As an all volunteer fire company we are always in search of new members. Whether you've been a member of another company and just moved to the area, or are completely new to the fire service please consider joining the Upper Salford Volunteer Fire Company.
When most people see a fire station they think of a municipal Fire Department. They might picture a bunk house and unionized firefighters sliding down poles when the alarm sounds. While most large metropolitan areas do have actual Fire Departments as a part of their local government, here in Montgomery County most of our fire services are provided by Volunteer Fire Companies.
What's the difference? Well the biggest difference is that most fire company members do not get paid to be firefighters. Upper Salford Volunteer Fire Company is 100% volunteer. No one gets paid, not even the Chief. No one sits in the station 24/7, we all have jobs to pay the bills. But just like a paid Fire Department, when the alarm sounds we jump into action.
No experience is needed to be a firefighter. We do require a physical exam, criminal background check and a short probationary period. After that, training is provided both in-house and through the local fire academies. You will also be provided with gear and insurance. Firefighters must be at least 14 years old. Anyone under 18 must provide working papers and parental consent.
Firefighters are assisted on emergency scenes by our Fire Police unit. While any firefighter can become a Fire Police officer, officers do not have to be firefighters. Just like becoming a firefighter anyone interested in becoming a Fire Police officer must go through the company membership process. Then Fire Police must be appointed by the township and sworn in by a judge. Training, gear and insurance are provided. Fire Police must be at least 18 years old.
We rely on an active membership for both our emergency operations as well as fund-raising and community services. Members from all walks of life are welcome. While firefighters are always in high demand our company is also actively seeking various types of support personnel. Anyone with administrative, financial, fund-raising or event planning experience is strongly encouraged to apply.
Training takes place every Thursday night at Station 78 in Salfordville. If you are interested or would like to see what we are all about please feel free to stop by. Training usually starts at 7pm.
If you've decided to join, please download the membership application and directions. In addition to the criminal background check which will be conducted online with your application, the state of Pennsylvania requires our members to obtain a child abuse clearance certificate. Click here to create an online account with the Commonwealth's Child Welfare Portal. Once complete, click here to log in and submit a request for a clearance check. If you have any questions or need any assistance, please email us at info@uppersalfordfire.org with your contact information and we will get you the appropriate paperwork.
